Crash Course: Pinterest for Seniors
Since it launched in 2010, Pinterest has been the fastest growing social media site on the Internet. The website is completely centered on images – whether you are posting them, or “repinning” them onto your “boards”. It is true that seniors and social media are no longer unheard of; seniors are becoming more and more technologically savvy, and many are beginning to catch on to the Pinterest craze.
We’re sure some of you are out there may be curious about Pinterest, but might be saying “How do I use Pinterest?” That’s why we wanted to put together this guide for you.
Introduction to Pinterest
What you see above the Rescue Alert of California™ Pinterest page. Each of these areas (50+ Activities, Advocacy, etc) are known as “Boards”. Each of these boards can be completely customized, so you could have a “Fun Foods” board, or a “Places I’d Like to Visit” board. By clicking “Add” at the top of the screen, you’ll be able to create a board, and start pinning!
Pinning refers to posting an image onto one of your boards. Each image is known as a pin. So you can see we’ve got quite a few pins here in each board! There’s no limit to how many pins you can place on each board, so pin away!
In addition to pinning your own images, you can also “repin” from others. What’s great about these pins is that they aren’t just images; they can have links to sites in the pins. So if you see a delicious looking cake, click on it – it might bring you right to the recipe so you can create it yourself!
You can start following people on Pinterest that you’re interested in, such as friends, families, celebrities, photographers, chefs, or artists. Once you start following people, you’ll see their pins come into your feed, like this. These are pins from all the people we follow on Pinterest. By clicking on any of these pins, you’ll have the option to “repin”. That means you’ll take that image, add your own description to it if you want, and pin it onto one of your own boards. It’s a great way to share amazing images you find, and to keep them around if you want to view them again later.
Why Do I Want to Pin and Repin?
So you might be asking yourself why you should get involved in Pinterest. I’ve got two words for you: it’s fun! It really is a blast to see some of the creative and amazing things that people post. You can just go and look at incredible images, or you can find great recipes or crafts ideas. Once you start pinning, you’ll find yourself spending countless hours on the site. There’s so much to discover and share. So go check out everything Pinterest has to offer!
